Expedition Recipes: Lots of wraps!

Breakfast – Spicy Bean & Egg Wraps

Ingredients (per person)
- 1-2 medium flour tortillas (wraps)
- 1 small can of baked beans (about 200g)
- Powdered Eggs
- A handful of grated cheese (optional but great for flavor and calories)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of chili flakes or a dash of hot sauce (optional, if you like a spicy kick)
- 1-2 teaspoons of oil or butter
Equipment
- Camping Stove: A lightweight, portable gas camping stove is ideal.
- Small Frying Pan or Pot: Use a pan or a pot that can sit securely on your camping stove.
- Spatula or Spoon: For stirring and handling ingredients.
- Foil or Paper Towels: To wrap up your finished wrap or for easy clean-up.
- Lightweight Plate: Optional but can make eating easier.
How to:
- Heat the Pan: Place your camping stove on a stable surface and heat a pan over medium heat.
- Scramble the Eggs: Follow the method on the packet on how to cook the powdered eggs
- Warm the Beans: Add the spicy beans to the pan and heat until warmed through.
- Assemble the Wraps: Lay out each tortilla wrap, add a layer of spicy beans, then top with scrambled eggs.
- Add Extras (Optional): Sprinkle on cheese or add hot sauce for an extra kick.
- Wrap and Serve: Roll up each tortilla into a wrap, secure with foil, and enjoy your meal!
Lunch: Wraps
For a Duke of Edinburgh expedition lunch, the food should be lightweight, non-perishable, easy to prepare, and energy-dense. Here’s an ideal ingredients list:

- Wraps or Pita Bread – lightweight, doesn’t squish, and a good carb source.
- Hard Cheese (like cheddar or gouda) – won’t spoil quickly and adds protein/fat.
- Cured Meats (pepperoni, salami) – doesn’t require refrigeration and is high in protein.
- Peanut Butter (or other nut butter) – high in energy and doesn’t spoil.
- Trail Mix (nuts, seeds, dried fruit) – great energy boost and easy to eat on the go.
- Granola Bars or Cereal Bars – easy snack with carbs for quick energy.
Dinner: Loaded Chilli Wraps
For a Duke of Edinburgh expedition dinner, wraps are a great choice because they’re lightweight, easy to pack, and require minimal cooking. Here’s a hearty wrap idea that’s easy to make with ingredients that travel well.
Loaded Chilli Wraps
Ingredients (for 1-2 people):
- 2 large tortilla wraps
- Instant Chilli Con Carne
- Pre-grated Cheese
- Small tub of salsa or any sauce you prefer;
- Rice
How to:
- Prep ingredients At home, pre pack your salsa into a small tupperware tub, and pre-grate a handful of cheese
- Cook the rice as per the instructions on the packet
- Cook the chilli con carne as per the instructions on the packet
- Load your wrap with the chilli, rice, salsa, cheese and any other toppings you prefer
This recipe is great for using up the leftover wraps, whilst still being filling, nutritious and filled with carbohydrates to keep you fueled and energised on your expedition.
