Welcome to MY Adventure!

October 2, 2015

…and to our first blog post. So often we get to the end of an awesome day of adventure and then drop in the fact we are a social enterprise and our adventurers want to know more. So here’s the more…

MY Adventure was set up 5 years ago by the Muirhouse Youth Development Group, an amazing charity based in north Edinburgh which works with over 200 children and young people every week. MYDG is at the heart of the community and young people are at the heart of MYDG and this is where MY Adventure comes in…

What was recognised is that so many young people growing up in north Edinburgh have an enormous amount of untapped potential. MYDG with support from Enterprise Ready Fund and Robertson Trust  set up our social enterprise to give these young people an opportunity to release that talent, an opportunity to develop real skills for a real purpose. That purpose is employment. Every activity that MY Adventure delivers is either supported or directly run by a young person which means every activity YOU book gives a young person a job. To support our young people we established MY Academy , a unique employability scheme funded by Young Start, the heart of MY Adventure.

One year ago we took on our most ambitious project yet; the renovation and reinstatement of an outdoor centre in the Scottish Boarders. The Towford Outdoor Education Centre lying unused for 10 years, an old school house set in 17 acres of its own land with a lake and native forest. Through crowd funding, Community and Social Responsibility projects with our corporate partners and members of the north Edinburgh community we started work. Since then over 350 children and young people have benefited from this incredible placed-based learning opportunity. We have recently been awarded £25000 from Social Investment Scotland Legacy 2014 which is a huge leap forward for the project. This fund is being used to support a team to explore the potential of the site and develop TOEC as a life-long memory maker.

So what’s different about us?

Values over profit. That’s us in a nutshell. 100% of the profit MY Adventure makes gets reinvested into the group for our charity projects. We put the values of the charity first and grow to reflect the needs of the young people we work with. Which means you are buying ethically.

Quality over gimmick. That’s what you will experience. The MY Adventure team is exceptionally passionate and skilled, each one of us has a long background of adventures all over the world and we are ready to share that passion with every one of our partners and customers. Be it canyoning, mountain biking or climbing we love it and you will too!

Leading not following. We are at the coal face of change in Outdoor Education and Adventure in the UK, shifting the sands of adventure and employability at the same time. The organisation has an entrepreneurial spirit that simply flows through everything we do. The MY Academy apprentices are also encouraged at every turn to make a difference, not just to themselves but to the community.

But don’t just trust my word on any of this; take a look at what others have said read our Trip Adviser reviews  for what our customers think, check out our Instagram to see what we get up to when out and about, or Twitter to see the social changes we are making. The City of Edinburgh Council has recently recognised us as model of best practice in the third sector an incredible recognition of the work we are doing. Our Climate Challenge Fund project has received national press in the Times Educational Supplement  for which you can what the video here.

So if you are wondering how you can get involved…

#joinmeonMYAdventure and have a blast outdoors, whilst also investing in the future.
